Jammu, the winter capital of J & K State, is one of the 20 districts of J&K. Popularly known as “City of Temples”, it derives its name after the name of Raja Jambulochan, who was the founder of this city in the 14th Century B.C. District Jammu is located at 74 degres-24‟ and 75 degree-18‟ east longitude and 32 degree-50‟ and 33 degrees – 30‟ north latitude. The district is bounded in the North and North East by District Reasi and Udhampur. In the East and South East, the District is bounded partly by Tehsil Ramnagar of District Udhampur and Partly by Tehsil Bari Brahmana of District Samba. In the South and South East of the District lie District Samba and Pakistan (Sialkote) in the North East, the District is bounded by Tehsil Sunderbani of District Rajouri. Most of Jammu District is spread over plains and some parts of it is hilly area also. It is climatically very hot in summers and chilly in winters. Monsoons set in mid July and extend upto mid of september. The temperature varies from cold in winter with minimum temperature touching even 0.9 degree centigrade to heat wave in summers when the temperature shoots up to 46 degrees centigrade. Schools remain closed in the months of June and July for summer vacations. The district has a combination of fertile and barren land. Main crops cultivated in the district are paddy, wheat, maize, barley, pulses, vegetables and fruits. The famous Basmati rice is also cultivated in tehsil R.S Pura of this district. Besides there are Small Scale Industrial units of Cement, Steel rolling mills, Utensil making, Brick kilns, Rice Mills etc. Economically most of the people of Jammu District are well off. Jammu city is the business hub of the J&K . All the tourists visiting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Katra, Shri Amarnath Cave Kashmir Valley and other tourist spots in the State put their stay in the Jammu City and thus accelerate the business activity in the District. Raghunath Bazar in the Jammu City is the centre of business activities in the district. Dogras from Jammu are well known for their bravery. Most of the youth from the district are serving in defence forces.
